Popular Types of Houses
There are five main categories of architectural styles common to Pennsylvania. But many variations of these architectural styles exist See our new home communities for drawings of many elevations and floor plans.
The Two Story. There are many variations but here I’ll describe the Classic Pennsylvania Home. You walk in the front door and find a center hall with stairs leading
up to the bedrooms. On the main level you will find a Living room on one side and a Dining Room to the other. Behind these rooms are the Family Room, the
Kitchen and Breakfast room. Usually there is a full basement and a garage.
Ranch. The defining characteristic of a Ranch is one level living. The Master Bedroom and Guest Bedrooms are all on the main level. As well as the Kitchen and Dining
spaces. The design will have a Living Room and/or Family Room. Newer variations have vaulted ceilings.
Split Level. More than one level, usually three or more. The front door enters right to the Foyer and/or Living Room with a half set of stairs up to bedrooms and down
to Family Rooms and Basements.
Bi-level. Two levels to the homes including basement. Differs from a Ranch in that the front door opens to a landing between the Living Room level and the Lower Level.
Contemporary. Number of levels may vary. Usually lots of windows. May have a flat roof. Cedar siding is not uncommon.
